Artist's Statement
"Recognizing visual structures depends on simplicity of line. In my sculptures, shape is created by carefully focussing on how material builds line by line (woven baskets), row upon row (knitted thread) or layer upon layer (felted strands). It is a process of expansion by creating units through repeated lines, motifs through repeated units, and using repeated motifs (fractals) that evolve organically into shapes that form distinct lines. This process is a metaphor for life and evolution, building upon experiences generation after generation, like knowledge passed from mother to daughter, honoring past culture while creating new tradition. More recently my work has begun to focus on the layers of economic and politic actions that now complicate the evolution of natural ecology and how inextricably intertwined all have become".
